... can you renew license plates that aren't actually registered to a car.

Kinja'd!!!

This plate is going onto Project $300. It costs the same to re-reg these plates and then send in the title paperwork as it does to get new plates when I send in the title paperwork.

I've got a WI plate around here somewhere that is about 25 years out of date - probably couldn't get re-regged at this point even if I were there. Also, it's a bit trampled and crunched. On a related note, I see that they're on a manic BEWARE THE RAILROAD streak a bit.

They're just too poor to change the sticker envelope since the 70's.

I have a pile of old plates I save from all my old cars.

None I would care about renewing. Although now since you can register a car online, I may save the trouble of having them mail me plates if I ever get another car.

Also in Wisconsin: people who don't realize you're supposed to put the year sticker on top of the old one, and instead spread them all over their damn license plate.

Kinja'd!!!

Of course this is on a Dodge Caliber purchased at shady used car dealer Schoepp Motors, with 3 separate displays of Jesusness on it.

There's a related phenomenon of people not realizing you can take off a tag frame to get at the license plate, and sticking the year sticker on top of the frame.

I know they've been using the same envelope since at least 1990. I think they just had a massive batch of them made waaaay back when and are still going through them.

I have two stacks on this plate, just because the first stack was starting to get flakey and stuff.

I saw an Explorer at the grocery store that had a band of year stickers across both the front and rear plates. Front plate was '03-'09, rear was '10-'15.

362-PJB is the plate from my Escort that I sold in July. It comes up for renewal on Dec. 29th every year.

I figure once there's too many stickers in the stack, just take a razor to the stack and start fresh.

The plates I have on my 135is date back to I think '06 or so, and the stack hasn't gotten too thick yet. Well, not plates, just plate. The front plate is in the trunk because Zimbrick BMW was kind enough to leave the front plate bracket off.

I hate front plates, but I've gotten pulled over in the Dells multiple times for not having one so I've resigned myself to having to run one.

When I rid myself of my first car, we were walking out to my new car and my stepdad and I passed the Firebird and he said "You sure you don't want to keep the license plates as a souvenir?"

I didn't.

So now I have some OCD about keeping old plates:

612-EHL from my first winter beaters (Talon, '95 Neon, '98 P71)

187-LCV (a.k.a. L33t Crown Vic from my '01 P71)

239-NCT (both Subarus)

And JQwhateverthefuck from my Silverado.

Only cars I didn't keep plates from were that damn Firebird (TAE-733), my Hombre (can't recall the number), and my lease '00 Neon (622-AXD)

Lucky for me I pretty much never go to the Dells.

I have the plates from the first car I ever drove (01 caravan) and my dad transferred them to my focus. When that one goes I'll be keeping the plates

I've seen that in Illinois, too. Very strange.

When I had my STi I held my breath every time I drove by a trooper as I didn't have a plate on the front. Was lucky.
